Tapri, The Way In

Where the road into Kinnaur runs beside the Sutlej — the stop that turns a long drive into a good one.

The Place

A staging post, in the old sense

Tapri sits in Nichar tehsil at around two thousand metres, low enough that the air is soft and the pines are tall. The Sutlej runs just below the road here — close enough that you hear it from the doorstep — and the old Hindustan–Tibet road, now NH-5, threads along the gorge above it.

This has always been a place people stopped rather than a place they set out for, and that is exactly its appeal. It is the natural first night on the way up into Kinnaur: far enough from Shimla to feel like you have arrived somewhere, and close enough to Sangla, Kalpa and the high valleys to make the next morning easy.

What you get for staying is the part of Kinnaur most people drive straight past. Pine forest instead of bare rock, the river loud through the night, and mornings where the mist sits in the gorge until the sun climbs high enough to burn it off.

A simple, warm guest room at Tribe Inn Tapri
The Stay

A good night before the mountains

Simple, warm rooms built around one job: getting you properly rested before the climb into the high valleys. Hot water, good beds, and quiet apart from the river.

Somewhere to sit outside when the evening is mild, and somewhere warm inside when it isn't.

The Table

Hot food, whenever you arrive

Mountain roads do not run to schedule, so the kitchen is built around that: something hot and filling whenever you get in, and a proper breakfast before you set off again.

Local where we can, honest always — dal, rice, roti, seasonal vegetables, and chai on tap.
